Reservar o Seu LugarBalance that protects you. Research, including reviews of randomised trials, links regular Tai Chi to fewer falls in older adults. Staying upright and steady is one of the biggest factors in staying independent.
Strong legs, supple joints. Slow weight-shifting in low stances builds leg strength, hip mobility and joint stability with no impact. Studies also suggest it can ease knee osteoarthritis pain.
A kinder load on the heart. Gentle, continuous movement supports cardiovascular health. Reviews have found modest improvements in blood pressure with regular practice.
A sharper, calmer mind. Remembering sequences while you move trains attention and memory. Studies link Tai Chi with better sleep, lower stress and an improved mood.
A practice for every decade. The movements are low-impact and adjustable, so you can start at any age or fitness level and keep going for life.
Healthspan is the number of years you live in good health: moving freely, thinking clearly and living independently.
What it gives the practitioner. Tai Chi works on the things that decide healthspan: balance, leg strength, mobility, cardiovascular fitness, attention and stress. Each class takes you slowly through flowing sequences of postures, with the weight shifting from leg to leg, the spine upright, the shoulders relaxed and the breath unhurried. Over weeks and months, this builds a body that moves well and a nervous system that knows how to settle.
Moving meditation. Because the pace is slow and every movement connects to the next, your attention has to stay in the present. That is why Tai Chi is often called "meditation in motion". Many practitioners describe feeling both energised and calm after a session, and carry the same ease into work and home.
Why it suits you. Tai Chi asks for no equipment and no particular fitness. It complements strength training and cardio by working on what they often miss: coordination, control and recovery. If you are managing a health condition or have concerns, speak to your doctor before you begin.
It grew out of Chinese martial arts and the old idea of yin and yang: that opposites such as soft and firm, empty and full, move and balance one another.
Tai Chi developed in China as a martial art shaped by Taoist ideas of balance, softness and the flow of energy known as qi.
Yang Luchan learned the art in Chen Village, then taught it in Beijing. His teaching became the foundation of the Yang style.
His grandson Yang Chengfu shaped it into the open, slow, even-paced form of Yang style that is practised around the world today.
Tai Chi is practised in parks across China every morning, and is now studied in clinical research for balance, heart health, cognition and wellbeing.
Tai Chi Chuan significa "punho do supremo máximo".
